Firefighters put out a small blaze in a block of Welwyn Garden City flats this afternoon, which they are now investigating.

The fire service received a call at 3.50pm to reports of smoke coming out of a basement flat in Howards House, in Howardsgate.

On arrival Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City crews put out the fire using one hose reel and one covering jet.

The fire was put out and the flats were marked as safe to enter at 4.30pm.

A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire County Council said: “It’s possible that it may have not been an accident so the fire service will be investigating further.”
