A fire has ripped through a mysterious 20ft man-made home in woodland near Welwyn Garden City.

Police were called by a member of the public to land south of Birchall Lane, where they found the “temporary structure” well-ablaze at about 12.40pm this afternoon.

A police spokeswoman described it as “20ft in diameter with clay-clad walls”, and said it appeared to have been constructed from wood.

She added that someone had been living in the structure, which had been there for some time, but when emergency services arrived no one was there.

A Welwyn Garden City fire crew was called by police, and oversaw the blaze as it burnt out naturally.

The police spokeswoman said officers are still investigating, and added that although arson was a possibility, it was too early to be sure.
