Passengers travelling through Welwyn North station have had to disembark due to a fire on the train.

The fire service, paramedics and transport police were sent to the station following reports of the blaze at 1pm today (May 10).

The station has been closed.

A police spokesman confirmed that all passengers are off the train and accounted for, and that nobody is trapped.

The ambulance sent two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance officer and a hazard area response team vehicle, but there were no injuries and no people taken to hospital.

The train, which was the 10.30 from Hull to King’s Cross, is operated by Hull Trains.

A spokesperson for Hull Trains said: “A problem with a Hull Trains service has been reported and the train has stopped at Welwyn North with the fire service called as a precaution.

“All passengers have been detrained and are being transported by road to London Kings Cross.”

Great Northern is diverting all southbound trains from Stevenage via the Hertford loop passing through Hertford North, and passengers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Updates to follow.
