Fears £1.4m Hatfield sports fund will be 'diluted'

Sports clubs in Hatfield and the surrounding area will receive a £1.4million boost.
The University of Hertfordshire will give the money as part of a revised section 106 agreement in connection with the construction of its park and ride at Angerland Common.
The new financial agreement was given the go ahead by councillors at the Welwyn Hatfield Council Development Management Committee on Thursday, February 4.
Cllr Steven Markiewicz said: “You need most of the £1.4million simply to replace these facilities. If we can have it matchfunded elsewhere then grand facilities would be more welcome.
“The other thing that’s been mentioned is to make sure in future if this land comes up for development that its previous use is recognised and any subsequent 106 agreements recognise that prior use.
“Time will keep marching forward and we may find at some future date that we’re pressured to release Green Belt land.”
The revised agreement also sparked concerns over where the £1.4million would end up.
Cllr Mike Larkins said: “Originally the 106 agreenment was for rugby and football in Hatfield. Now with this new resolution, it will be diluted with a bit here and there, not for what it was originally intended.”
