THE family of biker Dr William John Revell, who died after a collision with a tipper truck, have paid tribute to him.

Dr Revell was riding his black Suzuki motorbike during a crash with a white Toyota Hilux on the B1000, Hertford Road, between Digswell and Panshanger at around 11.45am.

The Digswell man later died of his injuries in hosptial.

A senior lecturer in Biological and Biomedical Science at London Metropolitan University, he ran the MSc Biomedical Science course there.

His academic career commenced as researcher at Guy’s, Kings and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, London, where he became a leading authority on the blood supply of bone and also that of the processes of aging.

His wife Val said he was well respected within his workplace.

“As a lecturer, Bill was a hugely respected member of staff who was greatly admired by his students for his wit, wide-ranging knowledge and his forthright attitude.

“Bill’s lectures were renowned for Bill’s energy and enthusiasm and for fun and entertainment. He performed his last lecture on Bioethics two days before he died and he received a standing ovation from his students.

“He excelled as a mentor to students and as a guide to colleagues less experienced than himself. “His advice was greatly valued.”

Dr Revell grew up beside the river Thames. In his younger days in Devon, he worked all weathers on fishing boats. He also drove pungent fish delivery vans, was a professional photographer and a performing tenor singer of traditional English folk songs in pubs and clubs.

Val added: “Everyone who came to know him found that beneath a seemingly gruff exterior, he was a charming, caring and witty man and with extensive knowledge of Science and the Arts.”

William was looking forward to retirement. His last months were spent plotting and hatching plans for the future with his wife, which included writing for publication, moving from Digswell to their beloved Norfolk and above all, planning for a journey through India on a cruiser motorcycle.

The 64-year-old leaves his son Jon, as well as wife Val.
