A man is holding a barbecue and family day in Old Hatfield in aid of the hospital that saved his life.
Fabio Hofer, 46, from Hatfield, had a life-saving operation at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London to remove a rare cancerous tumour, and is fundraising at the Horse and Groom to say thank you.
Between 12 noon and 3pm at the pub in Old Hatfield on July 22, there will be barbecued food, a raffle, and pub games.
Originally from Brazil, father of two Fabio is an IT consultant who moved to Hatfield 12 years ago.
His current health problems started in October when he went to the Lister Hospital to have a kidney stone removed.
“Then they found this mass that was the size of a grapefruit,” he said.
The operation, which took place on April 19 this year, was so complex that he was referred to Royal Marsden for a multi-disciplinary team to remove it.
“The Lister were amazing - they really did a very good job getting this moving quickly, because this could be an aggressive tumour,” said Fabio.
“It happened so quickly, and it was so stressful,” he said.
But he has nothing but admiration for how the NHS handled his case over the winter of 2017-18.
He recalled the crisis situation the NHS was under, with beds almost full.
He also sung the praises of the doctors and nurses at Royal Marsden.
“I was really, really impressed,” he said. “Everyone is treated with such respect, it felt to me like I was royalty.”
Fabio is still recovering, and because his tumour is a rare type that often recurs, will need checks over the next few years.
But for the time being he wants to give something back by raising money for the hospital.
“This is my way of at least saying thank you,” he said.
To make the day as successful as possible, he is appealing to local businesses for donations of raffle prizes in the run-up to the event.
Tickets will be £15 for adults and £5 for children.
Money raised will be donated to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
