Families enjoyed a picnic in Stanborough Park on Saturday to demonstrate public support for a new wet play area there.

Borough councillor Astrid Thorpe attracted about 100 people to her event, organised to support her petition with nearly 2,0000 signatures.

The borough council hopes the stalled High Ropes project will eventually fund a wet play area in the park, but councillor Thorpe argues it should act faster.

She told the WHT: “It was a lovely community day - lots of people came and lots more people signed the petition.

“People were really interested to hear that there is a budget ring-fenced for Splashlands Redevelopment.

“There was a lot of talk about the fact that St. Albans and Stevenage have them too and anger that there has been such a delay.

“We had detailed plans on show which were drawn up about five years ago, people wondered what is stopping the whole thing?”

“It is likely to be cheap to use for local kids. That is a big point as the sailing on the other side is expensive.”

She plans to hand her petition in at a full council meeting on September 28.
