A fairground ride overturned on the A1(M) after a crash between Welwyn and Stevenage last night, and a person was afterwards arrested.

Police were called at 9.36pm to the motorway’s northbound stretch between Junction 6 and 7 after the three-vehicle crash.

The fairground ride, which was being towed by a Nissan Navara, had overturned onto the carriageway.

A rolling road block was put in place while the carriageway was cleared. Police do not believe anyone was seriously injured.

A motorist who passed the scene shortly after the crash described the colourful fairground ride “mainly on the hard shoulder but sticking out into the inside lane”.

He added: “Very dangerous. I had to swerve to avoid it.”

A force spokeswoman said one person was arrested after the crash. We are awaiting further details.
