A comedian who fronts a Bafta-winning satirical show has been revealed as the controversial Parliamentary candidate standing as Michael Green.
Heydon Prowse, creator of BBC3 sketch show The Revolution Will Be Televised, changed his name by deed poll to stand against Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps.
Mr Shapps, while the borough’s MP, has been at the centre of controversy over the use of the business pen-name, which was used on web tutorials by his former company How To Corp.
The Conservative, who was first elected as the Welwyn Hatfield MP in 2005, hit out at Mr Green, saying the attempt to embarrass him distracts from real issues.
But Mr Green responded: “I think this is a real issue.
“We’re not standing on policy, we’re standing on one thing, which is raising the issue of Grant Shapps’ past.
“That’s what British politics is all about. It’s nice we’ve got the ability to make these points, and I think satire is a big part of that.”
