PENSIONER David Lawrence has died of a heart attack, just weeks after being evicted from his home.

The 68-year-old lost a long battle with Welwyn Hatfield Council to stay in his home of 54 years.

He was moved into a flat six weeks ago.

David was found collapsed by the pavement outside a doctor's surgery in Hatfield on Wednesday morning.

He died 13 hours later at the QE2 Hospital.

His brother Michael said: "During those hours he clenched my hand a couple of times and I knew he wasn't going to make it.

"They have blood on their hands. Why did the council treat him like this?

"Every day he went to bed he went with stress and every morning he woke up with stress."

David was told to leave the house on Bishops Rise, Hatfield, to make way for a family, following the death of his mother last August.

The council obtained a possession order for his two-bedroom house in December from St Albans County Court.

He was re-homed on February 25 and moved into a two-bedroom flat in Wellfield Close, Hatfield.

John Briggs, the council's chief housing officer, said: "It was with sadness that we learned Mr Lawrence has passed away.

"Our sympathies are with his family at this difficult time."
