Instead of their normal pupils, the school was invaded by the likes of Horrid Henry, the Mad Hatter, Paddington Bear, and not only Willy Wonka himself, but also an Oompa-Loompa.

Other kids opted for superhero, cartoon and fairytale costumes such as Captain America, Thor, Minnie Mouse, and Little Red Riding Hood.

World Book Day is an annual celebration of the pleasure of reading, writing and illustrating, aiming to encourage children to get involved and let their imaginations run riot.

• Pictures will be published in next week’s newspaper edition on Wednesday, March 14.
