Welwyn teachers launch national young chef competition

Two teachers from Welwyn are collaborating to create a brand new competition encouraging healthy eating for youngsters.

Ellen Tuck and Marie Reynolds, both of whom have taught at Welwyn schools, have collaborated with a food education expert to create a national Young Chef Award for Schools.

Katharine Tate - known as the The Food Teacher - created a pilot competition in Lancashire in 2017 that will now be rolled out acorss the country with Ellen and Marie’s help.

The award is for year six pupils (ages 10 to 11) and is ideally a six-week summer term challenge for pupils to design and create a meal for their hero.

Schools in Hertfordshire, Lancashire and Greenwich have already signed up to deliver the awards in their schools after the SATs this half-term.

Written by teachers for teachers, the project addresses curriculum requirements for cooking and nutrition.

As part of the competition schools are offered detailed lesson plans, an equipment pack, online support, as well as videos from the Food Teacher and Harry Lomas MBE, the Queen’s former ceremonial chef, and now culinary director of Wembley stadium.

Marie said: “Our aim, as teachers, has been to equip schools with all the necessary resources to practise food preparation and healthy eating within the classroom, in short to deliver the national curriculum on food and nutrition practically, through handling food!”

Ellen spoke glowingly about the first run of the competition, and said: “As teachers we were delighted to see enthusiastic pupils confidently apply the knowledge they had learnt and the skills they had developed to cook a menu of their choice.

“The delicious dishes delighted judges, teachers and proud parents.”
