The Busy Bees nursery on Mardley Hill is hoping to show pre-schoolers that maths is fun and “isn’t just about numbers”.

It follows research showing that, between 2014 and 2015, almost a quarter of children in England failed to achieve the expected level in maths before reaching the age of six.

Amanda Zienkowicz, the nursery’s assistant manager, said she was pleased officially to launch the ‘Nurturing Problem Solving to Mathematics Programme’ after figures for Hertfordshire broadly mirrored those nationally.

“We want to make sure we help improve children’s maths capabilities before they start school,” she said. “We’re trying to get them to look at things differently and show them that maths is everywhere around them.”
