ENGINEERING students from the University of Hertfordshire raced to victory in the Formula Student championships at Silverstone.

The Hatfield-based team were placed fifth overall against a tough international line-up, a spot good enough to triumph as the UK’s top Formula Student team.

The students were racing the world’s first all-electric car at the event, winning the Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technology Award for Lowest Carbon Production. The vehicle also took first place in the sustainability and presentation categories.

Senior lecturer Dr Howard Ash said: “This was a great result for the team and a real opportunity to showcase the talent from the university’s students.

“The Formula Student programme places particular importance on not only teaching students to excel in mechanical production but also to consider the wider management, marketing and communications skills involved across all sectors of employment.”
