Fern Kemp and Lillie-Anne Garvey, from St Giles’ C of E Primary School, near Potters Bar, were both successful in a Hertsmere borough-wide competition to name seven new waste collection vehicles.

Their name, Reggie Refuse, was a winner and will be emblazoned on one of the trucks.

Fern, 10, and Lillie-Anne, five, also received a £30 gift voucher for being winners of the Hertsmere Borough Council competition, which more than 90 children entered.

They were presented with their prize and stickers of their winning truck names by councillor Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for the environment and transport.

Cllr Heywood, who picked the winning names, said: “We were really impressed with the range and quality of the suggestions given. Thank you to everyone who took part.

“We tried to choose names which were full of character and promoted not just the waste collection aspect of our service, but also a green recycling message.

“Hertsmere residents will see lots of these vehicles over the next few years, as each one will visit 3,000 properties per week in the borough, so they should become very familiar with these names.”

The other winning names from children across the borough were Wally Waste, Lily Litter, Eco Erica, Recycling Ralph and Compostodor.
