A PROTEST march against the Hatfield incinerator will take place through the town later this month.

Campaigners are distributing more than 20,000 flyers through Welwyn Hatfield this week, urging residents to take to the streets on Saturday, September 24, in opposition to plans by Hertfordshire County Council and Veolia Environmental services to build a waste-burning facility at the New Barnfield site off Travellers Lane.

The march will leave High View, off Bishops Rise, at 11am and proceed through Cavendish Way, through the market place and into White Lion Square in the town centre, where a rally will take place.

Once there, hundreds of black balloons are set to be released into the air, bearing anti-incinerator slogans.

Welwyn Hatfield Labour leader Kieran Thorpe said there would also be family activities to attract more people and raise awareness of the incinerator campaign.

“It’s going to be fun,” he said. “We want as many as possible to turn out. Hatfield needs a victory, and I think we can win this.”
