School pupils showed off their entrepreneurial talents in a Young Enterprise Trade Fair at the Howard Centre in Welwyn Garden City last week.

One pupil, Jess Poon, was presented a special achievement award for her business acumen by Marks & Spencer store manager Josh Martins.

The challenge was to run a real business or social enterprise and make all the decisions about their business, from deciding the company name and product, to creating a business plan, managing their finances and selling their products.

Jess’ team, eXel, set up shop with an array of sweets and wooden accessories, and competed alongside four other Hertfordshire schools.

They were judged by Deputy Mayor Barbara Fitzsimon, Cat Lillywhite from John Lewis, Samantha Cundell from MBDA in Stevenage, and Mr Martins.

Young Enterprise is a national charity that motivates young people to succeed in the workplace.

Jo O’Reilly, North and East Herts area manager of Young Enterprise, said: “It was fantastic to see students selling their products.

“They have been working extremely hard and the experience and skills they have developed will give them the confidence, knowledge and skills to succeed.”
