Students at Hatfield’s University of Hertfordshire are building Formula One-style race car for a competition this summer.

The Formula Student competition involves universities throughout Europe creating the vehicles and competing at Silverstone from July 20 to 23.

The University of Hertfordshire’s UHRacing team will design and build the single-seat racing car, and have been boosted by a partnership with norelem, a manufacturer and supplier of components for mechanical engineering.

Howard Ash, a senior lecturer at the university, who heads up UHRacing, said: “Having norelem as a sponsor of UHRacing is enabling us to use standard mechanical components in the design of our race car wherever possible, which is proving cost effective as we work to a budget.”

He added: “It also gives us a unique opportunity to test our car on a live circuit ahead of the official Formula Student event, which is an opportunity not many teams have.”
