DO you remember those school days when the whole class trotted off down to the nearby cinema to enjoy one of the latest blockbusters free of charge?

Toy Story 3

No? Well me neither!

But that is exactly what Times Territory pupils have the chance of doing as National Schools Film Week (NSFW), which is in its 15th year, comes to Hatfield.

Teachers can book free tickets online via www.nsfw.org to take their pupils to see a range of recent hits including Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2.

The idea behind the ‘festival’ is to link the filming to the curriculum according to a spokesman.

“The goal is to support classroom teaching by providing schools with a powerful experience for their students that links directly to elements of the curriculum – supported by an on-line library of resources related to individual films and more generic topics – essentially an extension of the classroom,” he said.

More than 400,000 students and their teachers attended last year and this year – the week runs from October 18 to 22 – there will be 2,800 screenings at 570 cinemas across the UK.

NSFW director Nick Walker said: “We hope that teachers and students feel engaged in the festival and realise that attending a NSFW screening is far more than a nice trip to the cinema.

“We do this by giving schools added talks and on-line resources to contextualise the film; to empower teachers by giving them the opportunity to programme which films they feel tie in with school topics at their local cinema and finally to encourage students to explore new worlds by seeing films they wouldn’t ordinarily choose.”

The films will run at either the University of Hertfordshire or the Odeon, in the Galleria, and also include The Tale of Despereaux, Planet 51, Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium as well as The Princes’ Quest.
