Springmead School in Welwyn Garden City has launched a scheme to reward pupils for reading.
The ‘give me ten’ scheme encourages children to read for at least ten minutes every day, ideally with a parent.
Afterwards, parents sign their child’s reading record, and each class has a display board where children get a sticker on a chart for each reading record that has been signed.
Year 6 teacher Claire Murphy, who is in charge of Literacy, said: “The idea is to get more children to read.
“Reading is big on the curriculum at the moment. Standards have been raised. We wanted to make sure that children who weren’t reading are.
“The children who are reading are now being rewarded. The children love it and they get lovely books.”
For every 25 stickers, children are awarded a free book in assembly. Once they reach 150 stickers, they become reading champions. This means they get awarded special books, a certificate and their picture goes up on a display in the school.
Mrs Murphy said: “It has been a great hit with both children and parents, with most children now reading regularly at home.
“Some children who were reluctant to read are now willingly reading at home.
“We are very proud of the effort our children have put into their reading and look forward to seeing this reflected in their school work.”
