Pupils at a Welwyn Garden City school are celebrating after having been crowned winners of the Welwyn Hatfield Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge.
Teenagers at Monk’s Walk School were heralded as the most creative and entrepreneurial overall in generating a profit.
The Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge, now in its sixth year, tasks schools and colleges with teams of up to eight students to transform £100 into £1,000 or more for their partner charity.
They learn vital business skills along the way such as marketing a product or service and they have to come up ideas for fundraising events.
Each team is guided by a local business expert, known as a ‘Super Dragon’.
The schools which took part were: Monk’s Walk, Chancellor’s School in Brookmans Park, Stanborough School in WGC and Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School.
The awards ceremony, named Judgement Day, took place at Barclay’s impressive skyscraper headquarters in London, where a panel of ‘Super Dragons’ judged the winning team.
The winners from Monk’s Walk raised money for the Big Cats Trust and they were mentored through the five-month process by their ‘Dragon’, Affinity for Business.
Collectively the teams involved raised just under £7,000.
There was also a team challenge on Judgement Day which involved all teams preparing a one-minute story involving items that were displayed on the stage at the event, including a knitted hat, a pen and a scarf.
Chancellor’s pupils won this and received a £20 Nandos voucher for their entertaining story.
Chloe Robertson, Youth Partnerships Officer for Welwyn Hatfield Council, said: “It’s always great to see the students grow in confidence as the challenge progresses.
“This year has been a great example of how the they pull together to make their fundraising reach new heights and Monk’s Walk School did really well in the face of stiff competition!”
Micky Kosowyzc, Area Business Manager at Barclays (North East Hertfordshire), added: “We’re proud to have supported this challenge again in 2017/18.
“I’d like to congratulate all the teams on their efforts”.
