A BANG Goes The Theory host revealed the University of Hertfordshire’s two new Formula Student racing cars last night (Wednesday).
Jem Stansfield, of the BBC One programme, was at the College Lane campus to uncover this year’s effort before the Hatfield students compete in the upcoming Formula Student championships at Silverstone in July
The students used pioneering technology to build the 2010 models, with one of the vehicles using an all-electric, low carbon technology power train that could change the design of day-to-day road cars.
Dr Howard Ash, senior lecturer, said: “It was a great showcase of talent from the university’s students. They have earned a reputation for building fast, futuristic cars and have triumphed in some of the toughest races including the UK Class 1A championship.
“Accompanying this, they also finished second in last year’s German Formula Student competition, the highest finish ever for a UK university.”
The exhibition, which kicked off at 6pm, coincided with a special lecture on the ingenuity of modern day design by professor Stuart Arnold from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
His talk detailed the importance of modern technologies and how they could help society develop in the future.
Jem Stansfield, who presented Scrapheap Challenge, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time visiting the University of Hertfordshire and embracing the students’ achievements within Formula Student.
“Their work has shown real promise to change the future of day-to-day road cars for the better and I wish them every success in July’s Formula Student championships.”
