TEACHERS in Hertfordshire are being balloted over possible strike action in a row over the Government’s proposed pension reform.
More than 3,500 of the county’s teachers, lecturers and support staff will be asked by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) to vote on staging a walk out, in protest over Government changes to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
The move was described as a “stealth tax” by the ALT’s Hertfordshire secretary Nye Hathway.
“If the Government implements its proposed pension changes, teachers and teaching assistants will have to pay more, work longer and get less in their pensions,” Mr Hathway said.
“These proposed changes are political and not for the benefit of teachers and support staff who dedicate their lives to providing decent education for children and ask for a reasonable pension at retirement so they can live in dignity and respect.”
The ATL ballot will be held between Friday, May 20 and Tuesday, June 14.
