A MAN in his 20s has been left in a serious condition after his car careered off the motorway this morning (Thursday).

The crash took place after 1.16am on the northbound carriageway of the A1(m) between the Welwyn and Knebworth junctions.

Fire crews from Welwyn, Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage were called and had to cut the driver out of the vehicle.

The East of England Ambulance Service sent crews from Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “On our arrival, paramedics found and the occupant of the car trapped.

“We believe the car left the motorway, collided with tress and came to rest on the grass verge adjacent to the motorway.

“Paramedics worked to treat, stabilise and immobilise the man before he was taken to the Lister Hospital for further care.”

The driver has been transferred to a specialist trauma centre.
