Driver fined after baby injured in Welwyn Garden City crash

A BMW driver has been fined £295 after causing a crash in Welwyn Garden City that left three others - including a baby - needing long-term medical attention.

At Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on October 4, 38-year-old Michael Underwood from Harlow was given the fine for driving without due care and attention.

His driving licence was also endorsed with six points.

On the day of the accident, January 28, he pulled out of the junction of Black Fan Road and Cole Green Lane in Welwyn Garden City in his BMW, into the path of a car, smashing the windscreen and causing heavy damage.

A baby in the car has had to have plastic surgery and stitches after the crash caused a severe cut to his eye.

The baby, who had concussion, has had an MRI, and had to be kept in hospital after he kept falling asleep and then being sick.

A CT scan confirmed lung bruising.

The driver suffered whiplash, bruising to the hips, and is still receiving physiotherapy to the neck, back and shoulders as a result.

Her passenger also has to have physio after his left wrist was hurt, as well as receiving whiplash.

Underwood was also told to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge towards victim services of £30.
