It’s not just a shaggy dog story - your pooch can now join you for a spot of shopping at Welwyn Garden City’s John Lewis.

John Lewis & Partners launched the move at several of its stores at the beginning of November and the Welwyn Garden City branch is one of the first to welcome non-guide dogs.

It means that dog-lovers can combine their pooch’s daily walk with some Christmas shopping.

It will be rolled out to the rest of its stores by the end of January 2019.

The department store doesn’t seem worried about breakages caused by wagging tails or tangled leads - which are still the responsibility of the customer - and is allowing doggy companions everywhere except the cafe or areas where food is sold.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We had such positive feedback from customers after we allowed dogs into our Peter Jones shop last year that we have decided to now welcome well-behaved dogs across all our shops.”
