A RUGBY contest in Welwyn raised more than £1,700 to help a company director’s Everest mission in aid of a Welwyn Garden City hospice.

Matthew Aubrey will be part of an 18-strong team heading to Everest Base Camp in November to raise cash for the Isabel Hospice.

The 42-year-old, who runs Aubrey Homes Project Management Ltd, organised a Rugby 7s day the rugby club to help his fundraising drive.

He said: “It went very well, it was fantastic.

“When I tell people what I’m doing, some people say I’m just going on a long walk, but other people say wow.

“The people who understand what it’s like out there are the ones who say wow.”

Overall the day raised around £1,750 in donations and pledges.

The winners were a side named Welwyn Dowd.
