A Muntjac deer was ripped apart by a savage dog in a horrific attack in a Welwyn Garden City park.

Rebecca Head recalled the “horrible screaming sound” as a German Shepherd savaged the animal, in Moneyhole Lane Park last Tuesday.

She feared for her own two Staffordshire bull terriers, which were being exercised in the park at the time of the savage mauling, which took place at around 5.30pm.

Ms Head told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It killed the deer and then carried it off.

“This whole time the owner was nowhere to be seen and when it noticed us it started growling, at that moment in time I feared for not only my dogs but for me and my partner.

“This morning I returned to Moneyhole to find the discarded deer, well half of it.

“It was most upsetting.”

She added: “Dogs which aren’t to be trusted shouldn’t be let off the lead or walked in a public place on without a muzzle.

“I have two Staffordshire bull terriers and they wouldn’t do this, yet they have a worse reputation.

“I don’t feel safe to walk my dogs in Moneyhole now as I’m sure some people wouldn’t with their children.

“This needs to be stopped.

“People shouldn’t be allowed to walk dogs which are a danger to humans and animals.”

As a result of the attack she said she is considering launching a group to “look out for these things and make a list of any dogs that are known for this” to warn the public.

A police spokeswoman said Hertfordshire Constabulary was unaware of the attack.
