The bosses of a major department store in Welwyn Garden City have denied they will leave the town after a new shop was approved in Stevenage.

Debenhams, in Stonehills, will stay put when a new, bigger branch opens at Stevenage’s Roaring Meg Retail Park in 2017.

Rumours have spread in Welwyn Garden City that the department store would leave its three-storey home in the town.

A spokeswoman for the store said: “There is no truth in this and we remain committed to our store in Welwyn Garden City.”

The Stevenage store, which will be 100,000 square foot, will replace Toys ‘R’ Us on the retail park.

It will create more than 200 new jobs.
