A ROBBER caged for his part in a revenge raid that left a Hatfield man dead has had his sentence more than doubled today (Friday).

Amariloo Brami had been jailed for 16 months for his part in a robbery at 24-year-old Darren Leonard’s Northfield flat.

Brami, 22, was acquitted of murder in February, but admitted conspiracy to rob.

Three top judges ruled the sentence was “unduly lenient” after intervention by solicitor general Oliver Heald, and increased it to three years.

Representing the solicitor general, Zoe Johnson QC, said that, while it was accepted Brami had not been present when any violence was inflicted, his sentence should have been longer to reflect the aggravating features of the robbery.

Brami’s barrister, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins QC, contended that her client was a man of previous good character and had shown exemplary conduct in prison.

He is, she added, currently planning a wedding with his fiancee.

Lord Justice Pitchford, sitting with Mr Justice Roderick Evans and Mr Justice Turner, said: “We conclude that the starting point for this robberry was clearly unduly lenient.

“The judge did not, in our view, in his selection of the starting point, reflect the seriousness of the commission of such a robbery in the victim’s home.”

Mr Leonard died in July 2012

Brami’s cousin, Mikel Cela, was convicted for Mr Leonard’s manslaughter, and also admitted conspiracy to rob. He is serving a 10 year sentence.
