GARAGE rents will soar by more than 10 per cent across Welwyn Hatfield, after the council voted to plug a £125,000 shortfall in its budget.

The council-owned garage rents are set to increase from £8.75 to £9.63 a week after Welwyn Hatfield councillors agreed to the hike, at a full council meeting at Campus West on September 12.

A spokesman for the council said: “We must increase the weekly rental income for most sites from £8.75 to £9.63 (+VAT where applicable) to meet the shortfall in the budget expectation.

“However, there are also a number of garage sites that suffer from low occupancy and in order to encourage these sites back into use, some rents have been reduced to £7.88 per week (+VAT where applicable).”

But the shortfall may not be as bad as the council suspected owing to the effects of an increase that is due this month.

A council report states: “This [will] be reviewed as part of next year’s budget process.”
