CONSERVATIVE candidate Doug Berry has won the Welham Green by-election.

The Tory nominee came out on top in yesterday’s poll and will take his seat on Welwyn Hatfield Council.

He polled 539 votes, ahead of Lib Dem candidate John Elvy on 484.

Mark Fuller (BNP) received 214 votes, and Labour’s Bridie Croft got 88.

The turnout was 46.6 per cent.

Mr Berry will become the third member of his family to sit on the borough council, joining wife Clare and daughter Hannah.

The by-election was called after Tory Peter O’Brien resigned in October following allegations of child porn being found on his council laptop.
