A COMPETITION to find the best independent shop in Welwyn Hatfield has been launched.

The online contest will run until Christmas Eve, with the winner set to be invited to a reception at the Houses of Parliament.

A website has been started for people living in the borough to put their votes forward.

Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps, who launched the Independent Shop of the Year 2013 competition, said the award would be a “thank you” to a local retailer who has provided an excellent service.

He said: “We have some fantastic independent shops here in Welwyn and Hatfield.

“Our community would be very much worse off without the hardworking men and women who run them.

“This competition is a small way of letting our local retailers know how much we appreciate and support them. I urge everyone to log onto and vote for their favourite shop”
