THE last Clinton Cards store in Hatfield has finally closed.

The Town Centre branch shut its doors for the final time on July 19, as part of the final wave of store closures following the company entering administration in May.

Administrators Zolfo Cooper managed to sell 397 stores – including one in the Howard Centre in Welwyn Garden City – to a subsidiary of card retailer American Greetings, preserving around 4,500 UK jobs.

But it was unable to find a buyer for the remaining 76, including the Town Centre store and another in the Galleria, which closed in June.

The closures come at the expense of 18 jobs in Hatfield.

“It is with regret that we have had to take the decision to close the remaining stores,” said Zolfo Cooper partner Peter Saville.

“We are nonetheless pleased that in an extremely challenging retail environment we were able to effect the sale of almost 400 stores thus preserving something in the region of 4,500 jobs.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the employees of the former Clinton Cards business we have worked with during the administration period for their professionalism and dedication and to wish them well for the future.”
