WORK to stabilise underground chalk mines have been delayed.

Briars Lane in Hatfield was due to be reopened to the public this month - more than two years after being shut because of safety fears.

It is now expected that specialist works will not be complete until just before Easter.

A spokesman for contractor Ritchies told affected residents: "The condition of the ground has been worse than was expected with extensive areas of broken or heavily disturbed ground encountered.

"The good news is we are successfully treating these areas and the validation procedures are proving our success.

"Any final reinstatement of your gardens will follow on after our contract as originally planned.
