A car has erupted into flames near The New QEII Hospital causing long delays in the area.

Emergency services raced to Howlands after a Ford Focus caught fire at about 2pm today, and police have subsequently put a 60m cordon around the car and blocked off nearby roads.

Witness Brian Jones told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I saw the driver get out the car, and I said ‘look it’s smoking now, you had better get away quick because it’s going to explode in a minute’, and before you knew it the whole car was on fire.”

A police spokeswoman said fire has been extinguished, but the junction with Beehive Lane, just past the QEII entrance, and Ascots Lane, is currently still closed.

No one was hurt.
