A CAR smashed into a village home, requiring it to have emergency structural work.

The grey Lexus ploughed into a house on School Lane, Welwyn, at 1.45am on Saturday.

One resident in the village, who was nearby, said: “It was the biggest bang you’ve ever heard! I genuinely thought it was that satellite falling from space.”

Another added: “I was awoken by a tremendous crash then silence; in the morning I went down to have a look and it had demolished the front door and left a pile of rubble on the pavement, including the front grill of the Lexus.”

Police were called to the scene and closed off the blocked road until 2.25am, when the car was towed away.

Two passengers were taken to the QE2 Hospital.

Fire crews from both Welwyn and Hatfield also attended the scene. A spokesman said no-one was required to be cut out of the vehicle. He added the fire service’s structural engineer was called to look at the house, who later called on Welwyn Hatfield Council for assistance.
