A CAR was forced to veer off a motorway after it was struck by falling missiles.

A woman in her 20s driving a Citroen Xsara attempted to dodge rocks that fell from the Hatfield tunnel as she drove northbound on the A1(M) just after 1am this morning (Thursday).

Taking evasive action she mounted the kerb before coming to a halt in nearby trees.

The woman was taken to the QE2 Hospital with injuries described by the police as "serious".

The road was closed, causing rush hour chaos, as forensics carried out investigations.

A 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man from Hatfield were arrested at the scene for criminal damage with intent to endanger life and are still in custody
