A 98-YEAR-OLD woman has had her wedding and engagement rings stolen from her home by two callous thieves.

The victim caught one of the burglars in her back bedroom rummaging through her jewellery box.

The crook, aged between 18 and 25, pretended to be a policeman when challenged by the OAP.

It is believed he broke in through a window after jumping into the back garden from an alleyway in the Mutton Lane area of Potters Bar.

Police also think an accomplice made it into the lounge and stole cash.

Pc Rob Fleming said: "This was an appalling crime - to break into the home of a 98-year-old woman is just despicable.

"They stole her engagement and wedding rings - items of such sentimental value.

"It's hard to believe there are people out there who are willing to scrape the barrel of the lowest of the low.

"It's possible there were two offenders involved in this disgraceful event."

The woman said the man she saw was wearing dark baggy clothes and a cap.

Anyone with information should call 0845 33 00 222.

n Three other distraction burglaries have taken place this week, see page 11.
