ELDERLY and disabled bus users are protesting at the introduction of a double decker.

Since it started on the Uno 601 route many claim to be trapped in their homes as they cannot use it.

Wheelchair-bound Phillip Burrows said: "It changed at the start of the new year.

"We cannot physically board them.

"These buses are also very unhealthy for the environment."

Mr Burrows, of Stanborough Close, WGC, added: "This means I'm pretty much trapped.

"I can no longer go to town or to St Albans.

Many of his neighbours were in the same boat he said.

MP Grant Shapps said he was concerned by the situation and would monitor it carefully.

Michael Finn, general manager of the Uno bus company, said: "The 601 is a fairly new service and the problem is we did not expect it to be as popular as it is.

"The smaller buses were becoming very busy and we had quite a few disgruntled customers and in some cases we were having to leave people behind, so this is why we had to bring in the double-deckers.

"The problem has been noted and we are looking to do something about it.

"For the moment though, during non-term times the smaller buses will be used.
