Seven burglars smashed their way into Potters Bar’s Tesco with a sledge hammer and stole a “large number” of mobile phones.

A police spokeswoman said officers are investigating the aggravated burglary at the superstore in Mutton Lane, which happened yesterday (Tuesday, April 3) at 2.30am.

She added: “It is believed that a number of offenders forced access to the store via an emergency exit, and whilst inside removed a large number of mobile phones.

“It is believed that some staff members were in the store at the time, however they were not threatened or injured.”

The spokeswoman said the burglars had their faces covered and were wearing tracksuit-style clothing.

“We cannot say yet how many phones were taken, or when we will have this information,” she added.

She urged anyone with information to contact police and quote crime reference J3/18/495.

The latest raid comes after over £3,000 worth of phones were stolen from the same store last month.
