Army bomb experts have been called and roads have been closed after a suspected hand grenade was found in Essendon.

The device was discovered on a site in West End Lane, where a housing development is being built.

Church Street and Essendon Road have been closed as a precaution, police confirmed.

The call came in shortly before 10.20am.

A spokeswoman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “There seems to be a hand grenade which has been found, we’re liaising with the MOD.

“There is not thought to be anybody within the affected properties.”

It is not believed that homes have been evacuated.
