A WELWYN Garden City supermarket has thrown its weight behind a £250,000 fundraising drive for a new Girl Guide building.
Sainsbury’s has announced it will be awarding a year’s worth of fundraising cash to the Raise The Roof project, to build a new headquarters in Guessens Road.
It followed a vote by customers.
Last year, the Welwyn Garden City store raised more than £2,100 for Footsteps Pre-Nursery.
Sue Rees, from the 7th WGC Girl Guides, said: “When we received the recent phone-call to tell us the news, we were thrilled.
“The exposure and support is going to be massively beneficial.”
She thanked customers for voting.
Adrian Clark, manager of the Church Road store, said: “We will now be working closely with the charity to ensure they really benefit from the Local Charity partnership.”
More than 200 girls use the existing hut every week, but leaders say it is coming to the end of its useful life.
Planning permission for a new building has been granted, but it will cost an estimated £250,000, of which more than £6,000 has currently been raised.
