A BLIMP is hovering over Hatfield today (Friday) as part of a study into the visual impact of the incinerator at New Barnfield.

The balloon has been raised by Veolia Environmental Services, which is proposing to build the waste-burning facility at the site off Travellers Lane in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council.

The company is using the red and white zeppelin as a way of judging the visual impact the incinerator’s chimney stack would have on the surrounding landscape.

According to Veolia’s communications and education manager Vicky Cooper, the balloon is currently flying at 100m high, with a red windsock showing the projected height of the dome.

Earlier this month, a Freedom Of Information request by campaign group Herts WithoutWaste revealed the county council had carried out a study in 2009 which showed an 80m chimney would be visible from parts of Luton.
