A deer and a magpie became best friends in a Welwyn back garden.

Dennis Barr, 87, of Harmer Green Lane, happened to look out of his window just as a magpie and a muntjac deer were becoming best friends.

Dennis luckily had a digital camera in the same room at the time and quickly grabbed it to capture the shot of the magpie sitting on the deer’s back.

He said: “It was very lucky the camera was in the same room, three minutes more and I would have missed the moment.”

Dennis’ 300ft long and 100ft wide garden has attracted an array of wildlife over the years such as deer, badgers, pheasants, green woodpeckers and jays.

Dennis added: “It’s like a wildlife sanctuary in my back garden. It’s lovely.”
