WELWYN Hatfield MP Grant Shapps has asked residents to get behind the plans for the new QE2 Hospital.

Despite originally leading the campaign against the downgrading of the Howlands hospital, Mr Shapps welcomed the news that councillors had finally ended the uncertainty surrounding the QE2’s future by agreeing to NHS Hertfordshire’s proposals.

Having lost the battle to keep the original QE2, Mr Shapps admitted he was making “the best of a bad situation”, but said it was important to support the new development.

“We’re all so used to negative news about our local hospital so it’s good to hear about some positive developments,” he said.

“The priority now must be to get on with the job and get our new QE2 Hospital built.

“In the meantime, I think it is crucial that there’s as little disruption as possible for patients.”
