Furious opposition councillors attempted to scrap proposals for brown bin collection fees at last night's Welwyn Hatfield Council meeting.
The borough council is currently seeking the public’s views on charging up to £70 for garden waste collections.
Opposition councillors claimed slapping fees on collections would increase fly-tipping and lessen recycling.
However, members of the cabinet pointed to the need for savings, and claimed the “business case for charging for waste has been very carefully thought out”.
Both motions were blocked.
