ARSONISTS drenched a newspaper in petrol and stuffed it through the letterbox of a Hatfield home before torching it.

Fire crews rushed to the house in De Havilland Close, Hatfield, at 11.30pm last night (Thursday).

When they got there, they found the homeowner had attempted to put the flames out himself.

A fire service spokesman said: "When we arrived the owner had already put most of the fire out himself and we only had a small job of extinguishing a small fire which was left."

It is not believed anyone was in the house at the time, with the homeowner returning to find the house in flames.

Investigations are under way by the police, who are treating the case as arson.
