ARMED police raced to a property following reports of a shooting.

Officers were called to a block of flats on Wagon Road, Ganwick Corner, near Potters Bar, on Thursday just after 9pm.

It was reported that gunshots had been fired.

Police arriving shot a pensioner with a taser gun to help get the situation under control.

During the drama, police closed off the road as well as nearby Barnet Road and Great North Road.

As the incident unfolded, a police helicopter took to the skies above and five people were evacuated from flats in the property for their own safety.

The shot man was taken to the QE2 Hospital in WGC for treatment and was released shortly afterwards.

Detective sergeant Irene Patel said: "Although the incident would have been disturbing for those involved, it was isolated and brought under control as quickly as possible.

"We apologise to members of the local community who may have been inconvenienced.

"Public safety remains a priority."

A total of 37 officers have been dealing with the incident and a forensic examination is taking place to determine the sequence of events.

# A 70-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were both arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Both men were bailed by police until April 7.
