A TOP business leader has said the closure of the Argos Direct depot in WGC will have a huge knock-on effect for the area.

The WHT revealed today that the Bessemer Road warehouse is set to shut by March next year, with the loss of 140 jobs.

Argos has decided to axe both its distribution centres in WGC and Trafford Park in Manchester, and centralise its service at a ssite in Castleford, West Yorkshire.

Mark Boringdon, chairman of Welwyn Hatfield Chamber of Commerce, was sad to hear of the loss of the Argos Direct depot, which has been based on the site since 1999.

He said: "It's not good news for us locally at all.

"This economic downturn is affecting all companies of all sizes, everyone is having to look at how finances are managed."

He added: "It is not just 140 people, it is 140 families, 140 families and their expenditure.

"It has a big knock-on effect for the whole area, because those families will have nothing to spend, meaning other businesses round the area will suffer.
